At Brookside Dental Centre, we offer both orthodontic and orthopedic treatments to help patients achieve healthy, balanced smiles.
Functional Orthopedics focuses on guiding the natural growth of the face and jaw—especially in children—so they develop proper alignment, better breathing, and a strong bite. Many bite problems (about 80%) are caused by habits or environmental factors like mouth breathing, poor tongue posture, or enlarged tonsils, rather than genetics. By addressing these early, we can encourage normal facial growth and often prevent the need for more extensive treatment later.
Functional orthopedic therapy may involve simple, removable appliances that gently train the jaw and facial muscles. This approach can help prevent future concerns such as snoring, sleep apnea, TMJ pain, and narrow jaw development.
Orthodontics, on the other hand, focuses on straightening the teeth once they have fully developed. This can be done using traditional braces (bonded metal brackets) or clear aligners like Invisalign, which discreetly move the teeth into proper alignment. These treatments help create a balanced, confident smile and improve bite function.

What is the best age to start treatment?
The earlier we start, the better! Ages 3–12 are ideal for guiding jaw growth and preventing future problems.
Will my child still need braces later?
Many children can avoid braces or need much shorter treatment with early care. It depends on each child’s needs.
